About Lake Kawaguchi
Lake Kawaguchi is the closest of the Fuji Five Lakes and the one where the mountain stands cleanly across the water. The odds matter more than the hour here: Fuji hides behind cloud most of the summer and shows itself on cold clear mornings from November to February, which is when serious sessions are booked. Chureito Pagoda, twenty minutes away up four hundred steps, gives the frame everyone knows — pagoda, blossom and mountain stacked in one shot — for about ten days in mid-April. Oishi Park on the north shore puts lavender in the foreground in July and kochia red in October. It is two hours from Tokyo by bus or train, and worth an overnight so the shoot can start at first light rather than after the cloud has built.

Top Photo Spots on Lake Kawaguchi
The most photogenic locations for your Lake Kawaguchi photoshoot
Chureito Pagoda
A five-storey pagoda on a hillside with Mount Fuji behind — one of the most famous views in Japan, up some four hundred steps.
Best time: Sunrise on a clear morning, ideally in the colder months
Check that Fuji is clear before you go — summer haze hides it much of the time. Start the climb in the dark to reach the lookout as the light comes.
Oishi Park on the north shore
A lakeside park of flower beds with Fuji straight across the water — lavender in early summer, red kochia in autumn.
Best time: Early morning, when the lake is still and Fuji clearest
Go early for a reflection on a still lake. If cloud covers Fuji, the flowers and the lakeside still carry the session.
Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba
A hamlet of thatched-roof farmhouses at the foot of Fuji, rebuilt as an open-air village of crafts and teahouses.
Best time: Morning on a clear day, for Fuji behind the roofs
Check the Fuji forecast — the mountain makes the frame. Rent a kimono in the village or bring your own, and check the village's rules for shoots first.
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to rent the kimono ourselves?
Yes — we don't rent kimono. Book a rental shop close to where you'll be photographed (ask your photographer to suggest one) and take its earliest slot: dressing takes about thirty minutes to an hour, and most shops want the kimono back the same day. For Fushimi Inari at dawn, check the shop opens early enough. In summer many shops offer yukata, a light cotton kimono that is cooler and quicker to put on. In Gion, stay on the public streets — the narrow lanes off Hanamikoji are private — and never photograph geiko or maiko without their consent.
How much does a photoshoot in Lake Kawaguchi cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Lake Kawaguchi: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in Lake Kawaguchi?
November to February gives the best odds of a clear Fuji, and the mountain is the reason to come. Chureito Pagoda with blossom below it is a ten-day window in mid-April and the busiest morning of the year. Lavender fills Oishi Park in July. Whatever the season, shoot at first light: cloud builds around the summit as the day warms.
