About Hakone
Hakone exists in most itineraries for one picture: the red gate of Hakone Shrine standing in Lake Ashi, with the mountain behind it when the air is clear. That clarity is seasonal — November to February gives the best odds, and the gate is worth reaching before the queue forms, since people now wait an hour for the same frame. Beyond it the area is a spa town spread across a caldera: ryokan gardens with private onsen, the cedar avenue of the old Tokaido road, the open-air sculpture museum, and the ropeway over the sulphur vents of Owakudani. Autumn colour arrives in the second half of November. Hakone is an easy overnight from Tokyo and the usual choice when a couple wants one day of mountains and hot springs in the middle of a city trip.

Top Photo Spots in Hakone
The most photogenic locations for your Hakone photoshoot
The Peace Torii at Hakone Shrine
A vermilion gate standing in the water of Lake Ashi below Hakone Shrine — the Hakone picture, with a queue to match.
Best time: First light, before the queue builds
Arrive early — the line for the gate grows fast once the first boats and buses arrive. Walk to the Moto-Hakone waterfront afterwards for the lake and, on a clear morning, Fuji.
The old Tokaido cedar avenue
A stretch of the old Edo highway between giant cedars four centuries old — shade, stillness and green light a few minutes from the lake.
Best time: Any time of day; soft and green in light rain
Save it for the middle of the day, when the light on the lakeshore is hard. The path is uneven — wear shoes you can walk in.
Onshi-Hakone Park
A wooded headland on Lake Ashi with lawns and lookouts over the water — on clear days, Fuji across the lake.
Best time: Early morning in the colder months, when Fuji is most often clear
Check the Fuji forecast or a live webcam the evening before. If the mountain is hidden, the lake and the woods still carry the session.
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to rent the kimono ourselves?
Yes — we don't rent kimono. Book a rental shop close to where you'll be photographed (ask your photographer to suggest one) and take its earliest slot: dressing takes about thirty minutes to an hour, and most shops want the kimono back the same day. For Fushimi Inari at dawn, check the shop opens early enough. In summer many shops offer yukata, a light cotton kimono that is cooler and quicker to put on. In Gion, stay on the public streets — the narrow lanes off Hanamikoji are private — and never photograph geiko or maiko without their consent.
How much does a photoshoot in Hakone cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Hakone: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in Hakone?
November to February, if Mount Fuji matters. The mountain hides behind cloud through most of the summer and shows itself on cold clear mornings in winter, which is when the torii on Lake Ashi photographs as people imagine it. Arrive early: the queue for that frame can run an hour by mid-morning. Autumn colour peaks in the second half of November, and the ryokan gardens work in any season.
