Chureito Pagoda

A five-storey pagoda on a hillside with Mount Fuji behind — one of the most famous views in Japan, up some four hundred steps.

About Chureito Pagoda

Get directions

The Chureito Pagoda stands on a hillside in Arakurayama Sengen Park in Fujiyoshida, and from the lookout above it the pagoda sits in front of Mount Fuji — the view on a thousand posters. In spring cherry blossom fills the slope; in autumn the maples turn.

Reaching it means some four hundred steps up the hill, and the lookout platform is small and crowded on clear mornings. Sunrise is the time, for both the light and the space.

The park sits among homes, and the town has struggled with crowds: keep to the paths and the park, don't stand in residential streets for a better angle, and keep your voices down early in the morning.

Tips

Check that Fuji is clear before you go — summer haze hides it much of the time. Start the climb in the dark to reach the lookout as the light comes.
