About Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba

Get directions

Nenba is a hamlet of thatched-roof houses by Lake Saiko, the next lake west of Kawaguchi, rebuilt after a landslide destroyed the original village in the 1960s. Today the farmhouses hold craft workshops, small shops and teahouses, and on clear days Mount Fuji rises behind the roofs.

The thatch, the stone paths and the mountain make a rural Japan that is hard to find this close to Tokyo, and in kimono it is especially lovely. Autumn colour and winter snow both suit it.

Entry is paid, and the village has its own rules for photography and kimono rental — check before you go. Local buses run from Kawaguchiko station.

Tips

Check the Fuji forecast — the mountain makes the frame. Rent a kimono in the village or bring your own, and check the village's rules for shoots first.
