About Lake Kawaguchi
Lake Kawaguchi is the closest of the Fuji Five Lakes and the one where the mountain stands cleanly across the water. The odds matter more than the hour here: Fuji hides behind cloud most of the summer and shows itself on cold clear mornings from November to February, which is when serious sessions are booked. Chureito Pagoda, twenty minutes away up four hundred steps, gives the frame everyone knows — pagoda, blossom and mountain stacked in one shot — for about ten days in mid-April. Oishi Park on the north shore puts lavender in the foreground in July and kochia red in October. It is two hours from Tokyo by bus or train, and worth an overnight so the shoot can start at first light rather than after the cloud has built.
