Kimono Photographer in Kamakura
A kimono shoot in Kamakura starts at a rental shop by the station, then the raised Dankazura path to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and the lanes off Komachi-dori before they fill; temples and shrines set their own rules for professional shoots, so the photographer plans the route around the ones that allow it.

About Kamakura
Kamakura was the country's capital eight hundred years ago and kept the temples when the power moved on. The Great Buddha at Kotoku-in sits in the open air, which makes it easier to photograph than most; Hokoku-ji's bamboo grove is smaller than Arashiyama's and usually emptier, with a tea house at the end of the path. The town's other pleasure is the Enoden, a one-carriage tram that runs between the houses and comes out at the sea near Kamakurakokomae, a level crossing with the beach behind it that is on half the postcards in Japan. Hydrangeas take over the temple steps at Meigetsu-in and Hase-dera in June. It is an hour from Shinjuku, which makes it the usual choice for a session that wants old Japan and the sea without an overnight stay.

Top Photo Spots in Kamakura
The most photogenic locations for your Kamakura photoshoot
The Great Buddha at Kotoku-in
A bronze Buddha more than eleven metres tall, sitting in the open air since its hall was washed away five centuries ago.
Best time: Morning, soon after the gates open
Shoot from the back of the courtyard to fit the whole figure with you in front. Hase-dera is a few minutes' walk away, so the two make one session.
Hase-dera and its view over the bay
A hillside temple of gardens, ponds and rows of small statues, with a terrace looking out over Yuigahama Bay.
Best time: Morning; late afternoon for warm light over the bay
In hydrangea season, expect timed entry to the hillside path and go early. Treat the Jizo statues as the memorials they are.
Shichirigahama and the Enoden coast
A long beach facing Enoshima, with Fuji over the sea on clear winter days and the little Enoden train running along the shore.
Best time: Sunset, especially from late autumn to early spring
Check the forecast for a clear horizon if you want Fuji in the frame. Stay off the tracks and out of the road at the crossings.
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to rent the kimono ourselves?
Yes — we don't rent kimono. Book a rental shop close to where you'll be photographed (ask your photographer to suggest one) and take its earliest slot: dressing takes about thirty minutes to an hour, and most shops want the kimono back the same day. For Fushimi Inari at dawn, check the shop opens early enough. In summer many shops offer yukata, a light cotton kimono that is cooler and quicker to put on. In Gion, stay on the public streets — the narrow lanes off Hanamikoji are private — and never photograph geiko or maiko without their consent.
How much does a photoshoot in Kamakura cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Kamakura: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in Kamakura?
June for the hydrangeas on the temple steps at Meigetsu-in and Hase-dera, which is the town's signature and also its busiest fortnight. Otherwise autumn, when the maples turn in late November and the coast is still mild. The Enoden level crossing by the sea shoots best in the afternoon, with the light coming off the water behind the tram.
