Hakone Shrine sits in the cedar forest on the shore of Lake Ashi, and its lakeside torii — the Heiwa no Torii, or Peace Torii — stands with its feet in the water. Seen from the shore with the lake behind it, it is the picture most people come to Hakone for.

The gate has a queue: visitors line up on the steps for their turn to stand under it, and by mid-morning the wait is long. At first light the line is short and the lake still, and the Moto-Hakone waterfront a few minutes away looks across the water towards Fuji on clear mornings.

Above the torii, the stone steps up to the shrine through tall cedars make quieter frames. It is a working shrine: keep the steps clear and wait your turn at the gate.

Tips

Arrive early — the line for the gate grows fast once the first boats and buses arrive. Walk to the Moto-Hakone waterfront afterwards for the lake and, on a clear morning, Fuji.
