About Takayama
Takayama's old town is three streets of Edo-period merchant houses, dark timber and white plaster, with sake breweries marking their entrances with cedar balls. It is small enough to walk in an hour and quiet before nine, which is when it photographs best. The morning markets run along the river, and the hillside temple walk above the town gives height. Most sessions here pair Takayama with Shirakawa-go, fifty minutes by bus โ a valley of steep thatched farmhouses that is at its most striking under deep snow in January and February, when the village is lit on a handful of winter evenings. The area is four and a half hours from Tokyo, so it belongs to trips that have a spare night rather than day trips.

Yoshino
I asked him to shoot our pre-wedding photos. Shiina asked us a lot about our ideal atmosphere and preferences, and took the photos with those in mind. There are many photos with just the atmosphere we hoped for, one that feels like a quietโฆ

Top Photo Spots in Takayama
The most photogenic locations for your Takayama photoshoot
Sanmachi Suji old town
Streets of dark-timbered merchant houses and sake breweries marked by cedar balls โ Takayama's Edo-era centre, best before the shops open.
Best time: Early morning, before the shops open
Start in the old streets at first light, then walk to the river for the morning market. Look for the cedar balls โ they mark the breweries.
Nakabashi Bridge and the Miyagawa river
A vermilion bridge over a clear mountain river at the edge of the old town โ cherry blossom on the banks in spring, snow on the railings in winter.
Best time: Early morning or dusk; spring blossom and winter snow
Shoot the bridge from the riverside path downstream to fit the whole arch. Blossom here comes later than in Tokyo โ check the local forecast.
Hida Folk Village
An open-air village of steep thatched farmhouses around a pond on the hill above Takayama โ rural Japan without the bus queues of Shirakawa-go.
Best time: Morning; under snow in winter or in autumn colour
Shoot across the pond to get the thatched roofs and their reflection. In snow, wear boots โ the paths are not cleared everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to rent the kimono ourselves?
Yes โ we don't rent kimono. Book a rental shop close to where you'll be photographed (ask your photographer to suggest one) and take its earliest slot: dressing takes about thirty minutes to an hour, and most shops want the kimono back the same day. For Fushimi Inari at dawn, check the shop opens early enough. In summer many shops offer yukata, a light cotton kimono that is cooler and quicker to put on. In Gion, stay on the public streets โ the narrow lanes off Hanamikoji are private โ and never photograph geiko or maiko without their consent.
How much does a photoshoot in Takayama cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Takayama: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in Takayama?
January and February, if Shirakawa-go is part of the plan: the thatched farmhouses under deep snow are the reason most people come, and the village is lit on a handful of winter evenings that sell out months ahead. Takayama's own old town is best before nine, when the streets are empty. Autumn colour arrives in late October.
