Photo spot in Takayama
Hida Folk Village
An open-air village of steep thatched farmhouses around a pond on the hill above Takayama — rural Japan without the bus queues of Shirakawa-go.
About Hida Folk Village
Get directionsHida no Sato, the Hida Folk Village, gathers old farmhouses from the region on a hillside above Takayama, many of them steep-roofed gassho houses moved here to be preserved. They stand around a pond with paths, small fields and woods, so the whole place reads as a village rather than a museum.
The thatch, the water and the trees make a rural setting that suits couples and families, and it looks its best under snow or in autumn colour. It is a calmer alternative to Shirakawa-go, the World Heritage village about an hour away by bus, which is often very crowded.
Entry is paid, and the village has its own rules for professional photography — check before you go. Local buses run up from the town centre.
Best time to shoot
Morning; under snow in winter or in autumn colour
Tips
Shoot across the pond to get the thatched roofs and their reflection. In snow, wear boots — the paths are not cleared everywhere.

Sanmachi Suji old town
Streets of dark-timbered merchant houses and sake breweries marked by cedar balls — Takayama's Edo-era centre, best before the shops open.
Nakabashi Bridge and the Miyagawa river
A vermilion bridge over a clear mountain river at the edge of the old town — cherry blossom on the banks in spring, snow on the railings in winter.
