About Shichirigahama and the Enoden coast

Get directions

West of Kamakura's centre, the coast road and the Enoden line run along Shichirigahama, a long beach of dark sand facing the island of Enoshima. On clear days — most often in winter — Mount Fuji stands over the sea to the west, and sunset puts both in silhouette.

It is an easy, relaxed setting: open sand, surfers, the sea wall, and the small green-and-cream trains passing behind. Sunset sessions are the classic here, especially from late autumn to early spring.

The level crossing at Kamakurakokomae is famous from an anime and very crowded, and residents and the city have asked visitors not to block the road — enjoy the trains from the beach and the pavements instead.

Tips

Check the forecast for a clear horizon if you want Fuji in the frame. Stay off the tracks and out of the road at the crossings.
