About Nikko
Nikko is where the shogun who unified Japan is buried, and the shrines built for him are the most ornate in the country: Tosho-gu's gates are carved and gilded to a degree that feels almost European, set among cedars three hundred years old. The Shinkyo bridge, red lacquer over the Daiya river, is the postcard and stands ten minutes from the station. Above the town the road climbs to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, which drop a hundred metres and are the reason people come in the second half of October, when the mountain turns. Nikko is two hours from Tokyo and usually done as a long day, though the ryokan up by the lake are worth a night if the session is an anniversary or a honeymoon.

Top Photo Spots in Nikko
The most photogenic locations for your Nikko photoshoot
Shinkyo Bridge
A vermilion arched bridge over a rushing mountain river at the entrance to Nikko's shrines — framed by forest in every season.
Best time: Early morning; autumn for the maples
Shoot from the road bridge or the bank to get the whole arch. Autumn colour reaches Nikko earlier than Tokyo — follow the colour reports.
Toshogu and its cedar approach
Japan's most ornate shrine at the top of a cedar-lined approach — gilded gates, carved animals and lacquer in a mountain forest.
Best time: Morning, before the tour coaches arrive
Do the portraits on the approach and the steps, then see the precinct without a shot list. Read the signs: some buildings ban photography.
Kanmangafuchi Abyss
A riverside path past a gorge of volcanic rock and a long row of moss-capped stone Jizo statues — quiet, green and a little mysterious.
Best time: Any time of day; most atmospheric after rain
Wear shoes with grip — the rocks and the path are damp much of the year. It is a short walk from the shrines, so it pairs well with an early Toshogu session.
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to rent the kimono ourselves?
Yes — we don't rent kimono. Book a rental shop close to where you'll be photographed (ask your photographer to suggest one) and take its earliest slot: dressing takes about thirty minutes to an hour, and most shops want the kimono back the same day. For Fushimi Inari at dawn, check the shop opens early enough. In summer many shops offer yukata, a light cotton kimono that is cooler and quicker to put on. In Gion, stay on the public streets — the narrow lanes off Hanamikoji are private — and never photograph geiko or maiko without their consent.
How much does a photoshoot in Nikko cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Nikko: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in Nikko?
The second half of October, when the mountain road above the town turns and Kegon Falls sits in colour. The shrines themselves work year-round under the cedars, where the light is even and the gilding does the rest. Winter brings snow and far fewer people; spring is quiet and green. Note that the upper road to Lake Chuzenji is slow on autumn weekends.
