Shinkyo Bridge
A vermilion arched bridge over a rushing mountain river at the entrance to Nikko's shrines — framed by forest in every season.
About Shinkyo Bridge
Get directionsShinkyo, the sacred bridge, crosses the Daiya river at the entrance to Nikko's shrine and temple precinct. Its vermilion lacquer against green forest and clear, fast water is the first great picture in Nikko, and it changes with the seasons — fresh green in spring, deep red maples in autumn, snow in winter.
The best view is from the road bridge alongside or from the riverbank, which takes in the whole arch. Walking on the bridge itself is paid, and the short crossing gives close frames of the lacquer and the water.
The road beside it is busy with cars and buses, so the session works best early in the morning.
Best time to shoot
Early morning; autumn for the maples
Tips
Shoot from the road bridge or the bank to get the whole arch. Autumn colour reaches Nikko earlier than Tokyo — follow the colour reports.

Japan's most ornate shrine at the top of a cedar-lined approach — gilded gates, carved animals and lacquer in a mountain forest.
