Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku

Retro neon, giant shop signs and an old steel tower — Osaka's nostalgic downtown, full of colour by day and lit up at night.

About Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku

Get directions

Shinsekai was built in the early twentieth century as Osaka's 'new world', and it has kept the look of an old entertainment district: painted signs, giant figures over the shopfronts, kushikatsu counters and the Tsutenkaku tower at the end of the main street. It feels nothing like the polished city around it, which is exactly why it photographs so well.

For couples or a group of friends it gives playful, colourful frames — the tower down the street, signs overhead, the bustle of the lanes. It is liveliest in the evening, when the signs light up, and still bright by day.

It is a working neighbourhood of small restaurants and their regulars: ask before photographing people or their shopfronts up close.

Tips

Shoot down the main street with Tsutenkaku at the end, then move into the side lanes. Ask before photographing restaurant staff or diners up close.
