Osaka Castle and its park

A white-and-green castle keep above deep stone moats, in a park of plum and cherry trees in the middle of the city.

About Osaka Castle and its park

Get directions

Osaka Castle's keep stands on massive stone walls inside a wide park, with moats on every side. The view across the inner moat to the keep is the classic frame, and the park around it is big enough for a whole session — stone gates, open lawns and tree-lined paths.

The park has a plum grove that flowers in late winter and hundreds of cherry trees in spring, and in autumn its ginkgo trees turn gold. Even outside those weeks, the walls and the keep make a strong backdrop, and late-afternoon light warms the stone.

The keep itself is a museum and the busiest part of the park; the outer paths and moats stay quieter, especially early.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon for warm light on the walls; early morning for quiet

Tips

Shoot across the moats rather than at the keep's foot — distance shows the castle at its size. In plum and cherry season, come early.
