Dotonbori at night

Neon over the canal, the Glico running man on the wall and the crowd on Ebisu Bridge — Osaka at full volume after dark.

About Dotonbori at night

Get directions

Dotonbori is the canal through Osaka's Minami district, and after dark its walls of neon, giant shop signs and the famous Glico running man reflect in the water. Ebisu Bridge is the classic viewpoint and always crowded; the walkways along the canal below give more room in the same light.

It suits sessions with energy — street food, signs, a couple laughing in the crowd — and pairs well with Hozenji Yokocho a few minutes away, a narrow stone-paved lane with a moss-covered temple statue that gives a quieter, older frame.

The light is all artificial, so it works from blue hour until late. The crowd is part of the picture; weekday evenings are calmer than weekends.

Tips

Use the canal walkways below Ebisu Bridge for space, and the Hozenji lane for a quiet second set. Keep bags close — this is one of Japan's busiest nightlife streets.
