About Kanazawa
Kanazawa kept its old quarters through the war and now offers much of what people go to Kyoto for, with a fraction of the queue. Kenroku-en is the set piece — a garden built over two centuries, at its best under snow in January, when the pines are roped into their winter cones, and in the first week of April under blossom. The Higashi Chaya district is two streets of wooden teahouses, gold-leaf shops and lattice facades that photograph well in flat afternoon light. The samurai quarter of Nagamachi has earthen walls and water channels, and the contemporary art museum gives a clean white counterpoint if the session wants one. Kanazawa is two and a half hours from Tokyo by shinkansen and pairs naturally with Takayama and Shirakawa-go.

Top Photo Spots in Kanazawa
The most photogenic locations for your Kanazawa photoshoot
Kenroku-en Garden
One of Japan's three great gardens — ponds, mossy hills, a two-legged stone lantern and, in winter, pines held up by ropes against the snow.
Best time: Early morning, soon after opening; winter for the snow ropes
Arrive at opening time for an empty Kotoji lantern. The castle park next door makes an easy second set.
Higashi Chaya district
Lanes of wooden teahouses with fine lattice fronts, stone paving and gold-leaf shops — Kanazawa's old geisha quarter.
Best time: Early morning before the shops open, or the evening when the lamps come on
Shoot the main lane early, then move to the side lanes and the river as it fills. Never photograph geiko without consent.
Nagamachi samurai district
Narrow lanes of earthen walls and old gates beside a small canal, where samurai families once lived — wrapped in straw mats against the winter snow.
Best time: Morning or late afternoon; winter for the straw-wrapped walls
Follow the canal for the quietest lanes. People live here — no leaning on walls or stepping into gateways.
Frequently asked questions
Can we shoot in a wedding dress at temples and shrines in Japan?
Sometimes — it depends on the place. Many temples, shrines and gardens ask for permission or a fee for professional or wedding-dress shoots, and some don't allow them at all; public streets and the area outside a temple's gate are usually simpler. Your photographer knows which places allow it and plans the route around that, and any fee a place charges for it is separate from the package price. Dresses, suits, hair and makeup are not part of the booking: bring your own outfit, and if you'd like a stylist, ask — some photographers work with local ones.
How much does a photoshoot in Kanazawa cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Kanazawa: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in Kanazawa?
January and February, when Kenroku-en is under snow and the pines wear their roped winter cones — the garden's most photographed state. Blossom follows in the first week of April. The teahouse streets of Higashi Chaya prefer flat afternoon light, and the city is wet: Kanazawa has more rainy days than almost anywhere in Japan, so a covered alternative is worth agreeing in advance.
