Tokyo Tower from Shiba Park

The red-and-white tower rising over a temple roof and park trees — Tokyo's retro landmark, at its best at dusk when it lights up.

About Tokyo Tower from Shiba Park

Get directions

Tokyo Tower stands right behind Shiba Park and the Zojo-ji temple, which gives the city one of its few landmark views with trees and old roofs in front instead of traffic. From the park's slopes and paths the tower fills the sky behind a couple, orange-red by day and lit after sunset.

The best time is the blue half-hour after sunset, when the tower's lights come on and the sky still holds colour. In autumn the ginkgo and maples in the park turn, and from the street in front of Zojo-ji the temple gate stands with the tower behind it.

Shiba Park is a public park and Zojo-ji a working temple; large setups and commercial shoots can need permission at both, so keep the session light and check before you go.

Tips

Arrive before sunset to find your angle in daylight, then shoot as the tower comes on. Step back from the tower rather than closer — the park slopes give the cleanest frames.
