Shibuya Crossing at night

The world's busiest crossing under a wall of screens — Tokyo in a single frame, best after dark when the neon takes over.

About Shibuya Crossing at night

Get directions

Shibuya Crossing is the image most people carry of Tokyo: crowds crossing at once from every corner while the screens above the station flash. It works best after dark, when the neon lights faces, and after rain, when the wet road doubles every sign.

Sessions here are about movement — a couple standing still while the crowd streams past, or walking across together on the green light. The signal changes every few minutes, so there are many chances, and the side streets around Center Gai give quieter frames in the same light.

It is a public street with heavy traffic: shots are taken on the green light and from the pavements, never by stopping in the road. Tripods are not practical here, and the viewpoints above the crossing have their own rules for cameras.

Tips

Plan several crossings rather than one, and leave the road as soon as the signal turns. Keep phones and bags close in the crowd.
