Proposal Photographer in Yokohama

Propose on the roof deck of Osanbashi Pier at blue hour, with Minato Mirai lighting up across the water — the deck is open day and night and wide enough to stay discreet; for somewhere quieter, the rose garden at Harbor View Park on the Yamate hill looks out over the port.

About Yokohama

Yokohama was a fishing village until 1859, when it became one of the first ports opened to foreign trade, and the city still faces the water. Minato Mirai is the modern harbour front — the Landmark Tower, the Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel and the sail-shaped hotel, all reflected in the bay at blue hour, which is when most sessions here are planned. A promenade laid on an old railway line leads to the Red Brick Warehouses, built for the port before the First World War and now shops and event halls, and on to Osanbashi Pier, whose wooden roof deck looks straight back at the skyline. Behind the port, Chinatown packs gates, lanterns and temples into a few blocks, and on the Yamate hill above it the Western houses and rose gardens of the old foreign settlement look over the harbour and the Bay Bridge. It is about half an hour by train from central Tokyo, close enough for an evening session after a day in the capital.

Top Photo Spots in Yokohama

The most photogenic locations for your Yokohama photoshoot

Osanbashi Pier and the Minato Mirai skyline

A wooden roof deck over the cruise terminal, open day and night, looking straight across the water at the Landmark Tower, the Ferris wheel and the sail-shaped hotel.

Best time: The half hour after sunset, at blue hour

Check whether a cruise ship is docked on your date — the port publishes its schedule. Bring a layer: the end of the pier is windy in every season.

The Yamate hill and Harbor View Park

The hill of the old foreign settlement: Western-style houses, a rose garden and a lookout over the harbour and the Bay Bridge.

Best time: Spring and autumn mornings, above all when the roses bloom in May and October

The Western houses keep their own opening hours and rules for photography inside, so check them before planning interior shots. The walk up from Motomachi-Chukagai station takes about ten minutes.

The Red Brick Warehouses and the Kishamichi promenade

Two red-brick port warehouses from the 1910s on the waterfront, reached along a promenade laid on an old railway line.

Best time: Weekday mornings for space; late afternoon into dusk for the lights

Start at Sakuragicho, walk Kishamichi to the warehouses and finish at Osanbashi Pier for blue hour — a natural route for a one- or two-hour session.

Yokohama Chinatown

Japan's largest Chinatown: painted gates, red lanterns and two temples packed into a few blocks, a short walk from the harbour.

Best time: Early morning for empty streets; after dark for the lanterns

Plan the gates first and the food second — the main street is easiest before 11 am. Motomachi-Chukagai station is right at the edge of Chinatown.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a proposal photoshoot in Japan?

Most sessions run between forty-five minutes and two hours. An hour covers one neighbourhood comfortably; two hours let the photographer move you between two places, which in Tokyo or Kyoto means two completely different backdrops. The photographer's packages on their profile say exactly what each length includes.

How much does a photoshoot in Yokohama cost?

Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Yokohama: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour harbour walk against a longer session before you book.

When is the best time for a photoshoot in Yokohama?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Cherry blossoms reach the harbour in late March and early April, the rose gardens on the Yamate hill and in Yamashita Park bloom in May and again in autumn, and October and November bring clear evenings. The rainy season usually runs from early June to mid-July and summer is hot and humid, so evening sessions work best then. In December the Red Brick Warehouses hold a Christmas market — check the dates before you go. Whatever the season, book around sunset: the half hour after it, when the sky is still blue and the towers are lit, is when the skyline looks its best.
