The Red Brick Warehouses and the Kishamichi promenade
Two red-brick port warehouses from the 1910s on the waterfront, reached along a promenade laid on an old railway line.
About The Red Brick Warehouses and the Kishamichi promenade
Get directionsThe Red Brick Warehouses were built in 1911 and 1913 as bonded warehouses for the port. Restored, they now hold shops, restaurants and an event hall, and the open square around them hosts seasonal markets. Brick facades, iron balconies and arched windows make a European backdrop that is rare in Japan.
Kishamichi, the promenade from Sakuragicho, follows an old freight railway: the rails are still set into the path, and its iron bridges cross the water with the Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel and the towers just behind — one of the easiest places in the city for a walking couples session.
Weekends and evening events can fill the square, so weekday mornings are the quietest. In winter a Christmas market fills the square and the buildings are lit up; check the dates before you go.
Best time to shoot
Weekday mornings for space; late afternoon into dusk for the lights
Tips
Start at Sakuragicho, walk Kishamichi to the warehouses and finish at Osanbashi Pier for blue hour — a natural route for a one- or two-hour session.
