The Great Torii on the shore
The vermilion gate standing in the sea off Itsukushima Shrine — floating at high tide, reachable on foot across the sand at low tide.
About The Great Torii on the shore
Get directionsThe Great Torii of Itsukushima stands in the shallow sea in front of the shrine, and it is two different pictures depending on the tide. At high water it seems to float, and the beach along the shore gives the classic frame of the gate over the water. At low water the sand runs out to its feet, and you can stand right beneath it.
Sunset behind the gate is the favourite, and after dark the gate is lit. Deer wander the beach, and once the last day-trippers take the evening ferry, the shore becomes calm.
Tide tables are published; read them before the session is booked, because the tide decides which picture you get. The sand is wet and soft near the gate at low tide — choose footwear accordingly.
Best time to shoot
Sunset at high tide, or low tide to walk out to the gate
Tips
Book the session around the tide table, not the clock. Stay after the last day ferries leave — the beach empties and the gate is lit.
