Nara Park and its deer

Wide lawns and old trees where free-roaming deer wander between the temples — Nara's gentlest and most famous sight.

About Nara Park and its deer

Get directions

Nara Park spreads across the east of the city between Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and the national museum, and its deer — held to be messengers of the gods and protected as a natural monument — roam freely across it. Many have learned to bow for the crackers sold in the park, which makes for warm, funny pictures, especially with children.

The Tobihino lawns and the Ukimido pavilion standing on its pond give open, green settings with deer in the frame; in autumn the maples and ginkgo add colour.

They are wild animals. They nudge, nip and butt when they expect food, especially in autumn when the stags are restless: keep crackers out of sight until you are ready, show empty hands when you are done, and keep small children close.

Best time to shoot

Morning, when the light is soft and the park is quiet

Tips

Buy crackers only when you are ready to shoot, and show empty hands to end it. In autumn, give stags with antlers a wide berth.
